The top 6 Premier League clubs have failed to negotiate with other clubs to keep five substitute rules in the meeting on 3/9.
On 5 /8, The Chiefs of Premier League Clubs have agreed to revert to 3 subs rule per match in the 2020-2021 season. However, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United, as these teams have to confront many difficulties in many fields, seem to disagree with this decision and maintain the five subs rule.
This topic has been under controversy in the meeting on 3/9. But nothing happened with the decision as the five substitutes rule did not get enough 14/20 votes to enact. As a result, the three substitutes rule, together with seven bench players, remained the same with all Premier League Clubs.
All the teams have agreed that their priority is to accomplish the season if an epidemic outbreak or something unexpected happens. However, as many topics have been discussed in the meeting, there were no new rules added.
As drastically affected by Covid-19, in the last season, The Premier League has passed the rule allowing five substitutes in a match as a part of “Project Restart”- a plan to start over the season, which then was approved by FIFA. Also, on 3/9, Bundesliga has voted to keep the five substitutes rule valid in the following season.
Jurgen Klopp- a coach who has a significant influence on the five substitutes rule, believes this rule has not negatively impacted weaker teams. However, many Premier League teams did not think so except for Brighton- a name among a few underrated teams. Meanwhile, on The Sun, a league chief said, “It was very important for us to show this was a big issue. We didn’t expect the other clubs to have a change of heart, but we did hope they might listen to reason”.
